Chapter Twelve

We’d ordered drinks, and we drank. A lot. Not only had I finished a house margarita on the rocks and licked all the salt off the rim, but I was chugging Cillian’s beer. He ordered another one, and we shared it, too. It became obvious as we laughed at things that weren’t funny that we were getting trashed.

After dinner, we took two more beers with us to the pool area and rented a canopy-covered double-lounger for privacy. We got in it and continued downing the beers.

I was sort of laughing, possibly drunk and drooling some, and behaving a little out of control. I asked, “So, why is our chemistry amazing in bed? Who have you been practicing with? There’s no way you could have remained celibate for all of those years, then perform like you did.” Every statement I made was joking in order to pay Cillian a compliment on how incredible he was in bed.

At first, he laughed with me. “Yeah, right. I’m good in bed—good for a laugh.”

I nodded. “I’m serious.”

He fidgeted by sliding his hand back and forth down his pant leg several times, then shook his head with a half-parted smile. “I-I don’t know what you mean.”

I slapped my hand on his thigh. “I’m trying to find out if there’s someone you’re involved with.” My blunt statement did the trick.

Cillian’s smile disappeared, and the fidgeting increased.

“Oh,” I said, my smile also fading as I figured out that what I was accusing him of was indeed true. “There is someone else.” As I stated the fact, my excited state diminished.

He swallowed hard before reaching for my hands and holding them. “You guessed right. I have been involved with someone since her.”

Ugh. I’d hoped to be wrong even though I didn’t know how it was possible for someone like Cillian not to have met someone else. “Okay.” I nodded, the alcohol continuing to take over my system. “Well, who? How did you meet? Is she still in the picture?”

He shook his head, sighed, and seemed uncomfortable. “I have something terrible to confess to you. I’m not sure what you’re going to think.”

I raised my eyebrows as if to ask him, “Really?” “I don’t think anything could be worse than what I’ve confessed to you. Please tell me. I won’t judge you.”

His eyes narrowed into slits while he studied my face to see if I was telling him the truth. Then he nodded and said, “I’ve told you how long I knew my fiancée. We knew each other in high school—since I was fifteen. There were others dancing in the video I showed you this morning. Do you remember seeing any of them?”

I nodded, trying to put all the information together, but my brain wasn’t working as well as it would if sober. “Your fiancée was one of the girls you performed with?”

“Yeah…”

I tried to remember what the girls had looked like. I’d been so excited by his dancing, singing, and silliness that I hadn’t really noticed them. “Go on.
